Abstract

Plaque is the main cause of damage teeth. For the user of
orthodonthic, mild inflammatory caused by plaque will be
more severe because leftover food attached to braces
easier and difficult to clean. Chew pineapple and starfruit
make mechanical motion of the teeth because of the
chewingnecessity longer to the fibrous food, more over
the adictic of pineapple and starfruit can help ini increasing
saliva. So that can reduce plaque and remove the leftover
food between the teeth, so can avoid from
demineralization.To determine the effect of chewing pineapples
and starfruits to care oforthodontic patient.
Research done by using Quasi eksperiment study. Location
and implementation research taken at Alamanda Dental
Clinic Yogyakarta in June until September 2012 with the
care of orthodontic population of patient at Alamanda Dental
Clinic Yogyakarta. The samples used was 40, taken
with Quota Sampling technic. The variable of influences
were chewing fruits, the variable of influences was plaque
score. Analysis of the data used was Paired Sample t-test
with significancy level = 0,05. Result of the study showed
the number of respondent distribution before chewing pineapple
there was 18 respondent with the percentage 90%
had criteria of score medium plaque, 2 respondent with
the percentage 10% had criteria of score bad plaque. After
consumed pineapple, plaque score with good criteria
accupied the highest position, viz.16 respondents with the
percentage 80% and the next was plaque score with medium
criteria, viz. 4 respondents with the percentage 20%,
In intervensi chewing the starfruits group, there was 18
respondent with the percentage 10% had the criteria of
score bad plaque. After consumed starfruits, plaque score
with good criteria accupied the highest position, viz. 17
respondents with the percentage 85% and the next was
plaque score with medium criteria, viz. 3 respondents with
the percentage 15%. From the statistical paired sample ttest,
the result was p=0,000 (p value=0,05) it means there
was an effect for consumed pineapples and starfuits in
plaque score to care of orthodontic patient. Conclusion is
there was effect for consumed pineapples and starfruits
in plaque score to care of orthodontic patient at Alamanda
Dental Clinic Yogyakarta with significant score from the
result of Paired sample t-test p=0,000 (p value<0,005).
